20 years of gaming – closure to a chapter of my life and the loop.

Time to get a little personal for this occasion.

Random Ramblings Vol.17 : SHADE – A very underused game developer / studio

SHADE, a small game studio that was founded in February 8 1995, focusing on game engines and in 1997 they started game development as well, making some really memorable games in the process and genuinly getting better with each game. Sadly, they almost never had the chance to strike bigger.

Random Ramblings Vol.16 : The wasted potential of Shining Blade

We’ve all been let done by a company we love before in gaming. A lot of games didn’t deliver on the hype they promised. It’s natural, marketing is built on raising the work of others a notch higher than it is to reel crowds. That’s not what happened that time with SEGA though and their game, Shining Blade. It was something very hurtful for the developers and the game : a waste of truly good potential.

Games to remember – Vol.02 : Over Zenith / OZ : The Sword of Etheria

Now that gaming has reached the height of its stupidity here in the west, I decided to look back at the old titles we brought over from Japan only to find this game, Over Zenith…made me remember a lot of things about it.

Playstation Portable and the games that could have been

It’s no secret by now that I have a bias towards the PSP, sony’s first portable system that has reached its 10 years on the market as of now. The reason for that is because the PSP, just like Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance, focused on developing a strong console without gimmicks for the developers to focus on making good games.

Just like the GBA game me Mega Man Zero series, the Castlevanias it had and a lot of good fighters in the forms of the Street Fighter re-releases and awesome Dragon Ball games, it also made new and fresh games that would become fan favourites like the Boktai series, the Mega Man Battle Networks and some excellent Strategy-RPGs like the Fire Emblems and the Super Robot Taisen revival series, the PSP also had great games on it. It impacted me even more though because a lot of the games on the PSP were dreams coming true for me, with the Dissidia series, Ys 7 and its spawns, the newest Super Robot Taisen games reviving old IPs, some excellent Hunting games and some of the best anime games to be put on the market.

The tl;dr version of all this dribble is : the PSP had almost all the games I desired, therefore uber based towards it.

Now that its cycle has ended in the market and everybody jumped on the Vita…yeah…I’d like to throw around ideas that take advantage of the hardware since I believe that, like the PS3, it can still be pushed futher before being completely abandoned. And my greatest proofs are games that came towards its end and still had room to push it, like God Eater 2. So look forward to a new series of posts regarding the games I always wanted to make for it(and one or two changes to some previous articles). 🙂 You can find the posts I’ve made and will make here.

Have a good one everybody. 😀

Create a Character Dissidia Edition – Vol.08 : Hope Estheim

I love the Dissidia games immensely, especially the second one, Dissidia 012 Duodecim. So, as you can guess, I want to contribute to the game and its community and try and “create” a new character for it. For this instalment, I give you the hope of Cocoon, Hope Estheim.

Dissidia Final Fantasy announced

Remember a few years back, where I linked to those articles?

Guess what? A 3rd Dissidia isn’t so impossible after all. If we can get it to be on both the PSP and the PSN for every other SONY console availiable.

Oh yes, this is totally happening. While I’m definitely jumping unto the hype train, I should first tell the facts at least. In this years JAEPO(Japan Amusement Expo) over at…Chiba I believe(?)…Square Enix announced among other things, that Dissidia is getting revived and is hitting the arcades. Here is the teaser trailer for it.

From the trailer alone, some gameplay changes have been made, most notable that the game now allows 3v3 fights a la Super Robot Taisen OG : Infinite Battle…or a more roided out Gundam Vs Gundam style of brawl. And a new character was added, from XIV from what I have read up online.

The greatest thing however : it’s on the arcades. This way, direct feedback and a first hand playtest of the game are enacted and developers are more tune with that kind of thing in Japan rather than online surveys and sales numbers from hit franchises(Capcom and Bandai-Namco don’t count, they are shunned for life by everyone), especially in the fighting community. This, along with Gundam Vs Gundam Extreme Versus and the Zenkai Battle Royale game can potentially rekindle an interest into this fighting-brawling genre in the arcades and finally come to our consoles once again. 🙂

Have a good one everybody. 🙂 😀

Random Ramblings Vol.14 : Warriors Orochi. How can we make them more interesting?

Warriors Orochi. The name of the first crossover between Koei’s two major franchises at the time : the Dynasty and Samurai Warriors games, a match born in heaven at the time, all the Warriors one loved from the games in one game with new mechanics and a new system but most importantly, new characters that could pave the way for something more and exiting. Despite that, I do believe that after the first game, some things kinda fell apart for the franchise and it went down a road I don’t think is exactly good or beneficial for the series.
